Forestry Division
The City of Cañon City has been a proud member of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program since 1980 and maintains a continuously active tree management program. Our mission is to prolong the life of our City Canopy through education and best arboricultural practices, to continually add to our canopy and improve it for the benefit of future generations, and to mitigate the risk of tree failure through pruning and removal of unhealthy trees.
To help accomplish our mission of adding to our canopy, the City of Cañon City offers tree vouchers to residents who would like to plant a tree in the public right of way adjacent to their home. Requests for vouchers can be made online at the Parks, Forestry & Cemetery page or by calling our office at 719.269.9028.
The Forestry Division maintains more than 5,000 public trees along the public rights of way and on public property. With the large number of trees that are under our care, regular pruning and inspections can take place over a multi-year period. Requests for pruning or evaluations can be made by calling the City of Cañon City Parks, Forestry, and Cemetery Department office. The public can also report City tree issues via SeeClickFix.
If a resident would like to hire a tree service contractor to perform work on a publicly owned tree, they must first receive a permit from the City Forester to do so. Homeowners are also asked to refrain from pruning trees in the public right of way on their own without first receiving permission from the Forestry Division. All inquiries can be made by calling the City of Cañon City Parks, Forestry, and Cemetery Department office.
Tree service contractors must be licensed with the City of Cañon City to perform work within City limits. For more information on obtaining a contractor license, please call the City of Cañon City Parks, Forestry, and Cemetery Department office.
