The Forestry Department was eliminated in 2013 after the Royal Gorge Wildfire. The City contracts tree pruning and tree removal services for all trees in City Parks and within the City Rights-of-Way. The current pruning contract does not include low limbing, which is the removal of limbs and branches on the lower 10 to 12 feet of a tree that may impede pedestrian movement, vehicular travel, and traffic sign visibility. Each tree the contractor prunes however includes low limbing as part of the full prune process. With over 5,000 street trees to care for, the Parks Department has been performing low limbing operations since the elimination of the Forestry Department for the sake of public safety.
