[ARCHIVED] East Main Street and Rhodes Avenue closure

Beginning Monday, December 11, 2023, the area of East Main Street and Rhodes Avenue will be closed to through traffic for the completion of the Rhodes Avenue Stormwater Improvement Project.

East Main Street will be closed to through traffic between Raynolds Avenue and the HWY 50 Access near 2970 East Main Street. Rhodes Avenue will also be closed to through traffic between Spartan Avenue and East Main Street. Detours around the work site will be in place. Access to businesses and driveways will be maintained. This closure will be in place for the duration of the project with an estimated completion date of April 1, 2024, weather permitting.

Work is expected to be ongoing for the next 4-5 months with a goal to complete the project in the Spring of 2024; during that time East Main will remain closed to thru traffic in the immediate vicinity of Rhodes Avenue. Local resident and business traffic for properties along East Main can generally access their destination from East Main via their respective side of Rhodes Avenue, i.e. properties located west of Rhodes Avenue along East Main can generally access their properties by entering East Main and heading east from Raynolds Avenue, and properties located east of Rhodes Avenue along East Main can generally access their properties by following west on East Main from near the bowling alley. The Humane Society is only accessible from Rhodes Avenue. During construction, local and business traffic can proceed along Rhodes north up to the Humane Society driveway.

The primary goal of the project is to provide a continuous drainageway from the Abbey Detention basin downstream to the Arkansas River. Work has been previously completed for the crossings under US-50, and from East Main south to the Arkansas River; and the work that is currently underway will complete the crossings of the Union Pacific Railroad between East Main and US-50 and is the last link to create the continuous drainageway from the detention basin to the river.

The City of Cañon City appreciates your patience and cooperation. For further information, please contact the Public Works Department at 719.269.9011.
