The City of Cañon City will hold a Public Open House for the Pedestrian Crossing Improvement Project on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.
Project design maps will be on display for the public to view; Engineering Department staff and Kelly Fredell (project designer) with Wilson and Company will be answering questions about the project.
For the past several years Cañon City, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), and Wilson & Company (Engineers) have been working to develop and fund a project that would improve pedestrian crossings along US-50 in the Downtown District (1st Street to 15th Street). The project need was originally identified in the US-50 Corridor Plan (2015) which was further refined by the US-50 Pedestrian Crossing Study (2017) and the US-50 West Access Control Plan (2020). Detail design based on the outcome of those plans and the public/stakeholder meetings that advised them is nearing completion and funding through a combination of CDOT grants and a local match has been secured for the first phase of the project. Construction of the first phase is planned to begin after Labor Day 2023 and completed in Spring 2024.
