About Us

Chief of Police

Chief John W. Schick Jr. began his law enforcement career over thirty years ago, in Gloucester County Virginia, when he joined the Sheriff’s Office there, in 1991.  Throughout his years with the GCSO, Chief Schick served in many capacities including uniform patrol, criminal investigations, and the training unit, where he served as an instructor in defensive tactics, less lethal, chemical agents, firearms, tactical operations, driving, radar, and legal topics. In addition, Chief Schick served as the supervising School Resource Officer (SRO), and was a founding member of the agency's tactical operations team, known as the Special Operations Unit (SOU).  Chief Schick rose through the ranks from a first-line deputy to Patrol Lieutenant, SOU team operator to team leader, to Chief of Investigations, and ultimately as a member of command staff, where he first served as the Administrative Captain, overseeing the agencies accreditation, professional standards, training, and personnel management.  Chief Schick’s final assignment with the GCSO was as Captain of the Law Enforcement Division, in command of Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigations, the School Resource and D.A.R.E programs, the Canine Unit, and the Special Operations Unit.

Today Chief Schick oversees the day-to-day operations of the Canon City Police Department (CCPD). The agency of nearly 50 sworn and civilian staff includes uniform patrol, criminal investigations, park police, code enforcement, and records and evidence. The CCPD also offers specialized units, including SWAT, Motorcycles, Mountain Bikes, Police Canines, and Mental Health Crisis Response. CCPD is affiliated with local, state, and federal task forces like the state auto theft task force (BATTLE), 11th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

Chief Schick has a Bachelor of Science Degree from York College of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science Degree from St. Leo University, and is also a graduate of the University of Richmond School of Business’s PELS (Professional Executive Leadership School) program, as well as the prestigious FBI National Academy, Session #266.
