Additional Information

Dall DeWeese was a business man and hunter-naturalist who promoted the city of Cañon City and was an active wildlife conservationist. He pushed for wildlife preservation in Alaska, Wyoming, and Colorado and was also president of the local chapter of the Izaac Walton League. Although he wanted to preserve wildlife, his ideology followed that of President Teddy Roosevelt, and indeed, DeWeese fashioned himself after Roosevelt. DeWeese hunted specimens of moose, Dall sheep, and wolf and some of these specimens were collected for and deposited in museums in Washington and Denver. Two specimens collected for the Smithsonian Institution are known as type specimens, which are specimens that are regarded as the type by which all other specimens of that species are compared to.
