The Cañon City Police Department K-9 Unit was formed in 2014 and was funded 100% by donations through the incredible generosity of Cañon City residents and K-9 supporters.
K-9 Duke is a 6-1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois, and is certified in Patrol and Narcotics work. K-9 Duke was purchased from Shallow Creek Kennels, located in Sharpsville, PA and became a member of the Cañon City Police Department on January 8th, 2015.
K-9 Boot is a 3-year old Labrador Retriever and is currently in Narcotics training in Colorado Springs. Boot became a member of the Canon City Police Department after being generously donated to our agency in April 2019 by a local resident. Once his and his handler's training is completed, they will be patrolling our streets looking for narcotics. They will continue their monthly training with the Colorado Springs Police Department and other local K-9 Units. In his off-time, Boot enjoys going for runs, playing with his Kong, and car rides.
K-9 Merlin is a 2-year old Belgian Malinois and is certified in Patrol and Narcotics work. Merlin was purchased from Johnson's K-9 in Colorado Springs and became a member of the Cañon City Police Department in April 2019. Merlin began his formal police training through Johnson's K-9 and recently completed a 6-week training course with his handler. Merlin and his handler will continue monthly training with Colorado Springs Police Department and other local K-9 Units. In his off-time, K-9 Merlin enjoys playing with his Gorilla toy and wrestling with his friend, Snuggles. Merlin excels at finding narcotics and locating felony suspects.
