The City of Cañon City is pleased to announce John Schick, Jr. as our new Chief of Police.
The decision was made after a rigorous hiring process which included a community meet and greet and interviews by multiple panels consisting of City of Cañon City Department Heads and community partners.
Schick has been in law enforcement for nearly 30 years and is currently a Captain with the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia. He has a Bachelors in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University, a Masters in Criminal Justice from York College of Pennsylvania, and is an adjunct professor teaching courses in criminal justice. Captain Schick’s experience includes police supervisory and executive-level leadership, directly managing patrol and criminal investigative efforts, mentoring and coaching, special operations, narcotics, crisis intervention techniques, and working with the community on projects such as shop with a cop, youth camps, and crime stoppers.
We are confident that Chief Schick’s experience and dedication to the profession of law enforcement will immensely benefit the City of Cañon City Police Department and the City of Cañon City as a whole. We welcome Chief Schick and his family to Cañon City.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to Tammy Wagner for serving as the Interim Chief since Daric Harvey’s retirement in July. Tammy will remain the Interim Chief until Schick’s arrival and will then resume her role as Commander at the CCPD. Chief Schick’s target start date is November 30, 2020.
We would also like to thank our community partners, city and police department staff, city council members, and members of the community who participated in the two-day interview process.
