City Administrator Ryan Stevens and Fire Chief David DelVecchio's joint statement regarding the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) cooperation agreement.
Urban Renewal Agreement
The City of Cañon City and the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District have come to a joint agreement on the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) cooperation agreement that in principle is anticipated to be mutually beneficial for the URA and the Fire District. For the development of Cañon City, it is imperative that all governmental agencies are working together, and we hope this mutual agreement will help foster future collaboration and growth. We would like to thank the Fire Chief, Fire District Board, and the Fire District Attorney for all their hard work in developing this agreement. We would also like to thank the Firefighter’s union for their valuable input during this process.
~ Ryan Stevens
Having a limited source of revenue, primarily property taxes that are subject to a multitude of impacts outside of the District’s control, was a key concern in attempting to negotiate an agreement with the City. In reaching this agreement, we feel the Fire District’s many concerns have been alleviated to a degree that they will not adversely impact the District in future years. Fiscal responsibility to our residents has been a guiding principle for the Fire District since its inception. Maintaining the trust we have established with our residents was paramount in working towards an agreement with the City. Both City and County residents of the District can rest assured that we will continue to be fiscally responsible as we navigate the URA process over the next 25 years. I would like to thank the City Administrator, City Attorney, Mayor, and Council for their understanding of the difficulties the District had in attempting to come to an agreement over the last several months of negotiations. We look forward to participating in the future growth of Cañon City and maintaining a close working relationship with City staff and elected officials.
