In the 1950’s, the City assumed the responsibility of maintaining right-of-way trees located along city streets. The Parks Department is responsible for maintaining the health of street trees as well as trees in various city owned public places by pruning them on a rotating basis and removing them when necessary.
In 2014 the City conducted a street tree survey to aid contractors in the systematic pruning and/or removal of street trees according to each trees’ needs. The number and location of street trees pruned and/or removed each year is dependent upon priority and available funding.
Staff conducts insect and disease surveys of trees throughout the community in conjunction with the Colorado State Forest Service and provides code enforcement of corresponding state and municipal laws. Wildfire mitigation programs are also developed and coordinated through the Parks Department for Cañon City mountain parks.
