"Safety in Neighbors!"
Welcome to Canon City and Fremont County Community
Watch! The mission of the Fremont County Community Watch program
is to make our area a safer place to live and work. Formerly
referred to as Neighborhood Watch, the concept is to help
neighbors get to know each other, watch out for each other and
report suspicious activity to the police.
This program is administered by the Community
Services Unit of the Canon City Police Department, and it is
overseen by a Steering Committee comprised of local citizens.
The Steering Committee meets the first Tuesday of the month
(except for August when we observe the National Night Out
Celebration).
Starting a Community Watch group in your
neighborhood is simple. We recommend a block with homes facing
each other, homes in a cul-de-sac, an apartment building or
mobile home park. To be eligible for Community Watch signage, a
group only needs to do the following:
- Determine if there is interest in the neighborhood. At
least 50% of the residences in a neighborhood need to be a
part of the watch group.
- Designate a Block Captain to serve as a liaison with the
Police Department.
- Have two meetings for the watch group participants -
they can't be any sooner than 30 days apart. (At the first
meeting, a police officer usually attends to explain the
program and answer any questions.)
- Develop a block map with names and phone numbers of
participants.
- Have at least 50% of the residents participate in
Operation Identification, marking their personal property
with an owner applied number unique to that individual or
family.
Once these basic requirements have been met, the
Community Watch Steering Committee will provide two 18" X 24"
signs that will be erected by the City. We are always looking to
add more watch groups to the program. If you are interested in
starting a Community Watch group or if you would like more
information about Community Watch, contact the Community
Services Unit at 276-5617.
