Police Crime Stoppers Fremont County Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization, made up of a board of twenty concerned citizens to support the efforts of law enforcement agencies in Fremont County. Fremont County Crime Stoppers was re-organized in May 1988. The Canon City Police Department provides one officer who dedicates approximately 20 - 30 hours per month to the Crime Stoppers Program. Crime Stoppers is a program designed to develop information in solving crimes. It offers cash rewards up to $1,000 to people who furnish information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in an offense. Private donations and fundraising fund the program; no tax dollars are used to pay rewards.
When a call is made to the Crime Stopper telephone line, 275-STOP, a code number is assigned. The incoming information is processed and then passed on to the proper investigative agency. When an arrest is made, the civilian board votes on the amount of the reward at the monthly meeting. All rewards are paid in cash. Since 2000, over $11,000.00 has been awarded locally. Crime Stoppers has proven to be an effective weapon in the war against crime. |
