Citizen's Academy

General Information

Patterned loosely after the FBI's program, the CCPD Citizens' Academy offers local residents the opportunity to learn more about their law enforcement agency. An initial Academy was offered in the mid-90's, and after personnel changes and the move to a new building, the Citizens' Academy was re-vamped. Since the fall of 1999, the Canon City Police Department has held two Academies a year - one in autumn and one in the spring.

The Citizens' Academy lasts for eight weeks, with students meeting for three hours each Tuesday evening from 7 to 10 at the Police Department. The CCPD staff presents a variety of topics, including:

  • Overview of the Criminal Justice System
  • Police Ethics
  • Record keeping and public record
  • Communications
  • Traffic control/Accident investigation/DUI investigation
  • Patrol operations/Arrest control
  • Investigations/Evidence Collection
  • Juvenile crime/D.A.R.E./Gangs
  • Firearms
  • Victims' Assistance
  • Animal Control
  • Bike Patrol
  • Crime Prevention

In addition, students may also participate in a "ride-along" with an officer on patrol for part of the shift.

Class size is limited. There is no cost to the student for the Citizens' Academy, and light refreshments are provided. Graduates of the Academy are invited to join an alumni association (see separate web page) to maintain their contact with the department.

For more information on upcoming Citizens' Academies, contact the Community Services Unit at the Canon City Police Department at 276-5617. We hope to see you at our next Academy!

Alumni Association

Following the graduation of the spring 2001 Citizens' Academy, efforts were begun to establish an alumni association for those graduates who wanted to maintain contact with the Canon City Police Department employees.

The Alumni Association is considering a wide array of activities for its members, including:

  • Additional training on police procedures and issues
  • Guest agency presentations (Fire Dept, D.A., etc)
  • Social activities (Christmas party, picnics, etc)
  • Assisting with future Citizens' Academies, including "Welcome Receptions" the first night of class
  • Providing food for CCPD employees working on holidays
  • Volunteering for various projects at the Department (role playing, STOP Team scenarios, assisting range officers, etc)
  • Serving on interview or promotion boards for Department employees

Alumni associations in other jurisdictions have sponsored murder mystery dinners, police department program and equipment fundraising events, community service projects and, even, law enforcement citizens' academy alumni association conferences.

Any graduate from any Canon City Police Department Citizens' Academy is invited to join the alumni group.

For more information about the CCPD Citizens' Academy Alumni Association, contact the Community Services Unit at 276-5617.
