Police Traffic Patrol
Police patrol services are, of course, the backbone of police responsive services, routine preventive patrol and traffic enforcement. With twenty personnel assigned, this is the largest division of the Cañon City Police Department. Response times in Cañon City are under three minutes to any serious call requiring rapid response. Routine calls are usually responded to in less than ten minutes. Patrol officers make most of the arrests of the department and those personnel are encouraged to conclude as many cases as possible, rather than refer them for follow-up by investigators.

Traffic
enforcement was prioritized in 1998 by assigning two officers to
"community policing response" in which problem areas were
targeted for increased attention. Some of these officers' time,
however, was spent on other community priorities, such as
downtown. In 2000 traffic was further prioritized by adding two
officers each year to concentrate on traffic enforcement and
traffic problems. Two additional officers will be added to
traffic control during 2001.
