Police
Bike Patrol

Like many
other law enforcement agencies across the nation, the Canon City
Police Department recognizes the value of officers on bicycle as
one part of its patrol strategy.
Being on a
bicycle allows an officer more mobility, as well as quick and
quiet response to calls for service. Additionally, Bike Patrol
officers are more "approachable" to citizens, with the
psychological (and physical barrier) of a patrol car removed.
The
Canon City Police Department's Bike Patrol officers attend
specialized training and obtain police bicycle certification.
Officers wear slightly different uniforms, better suited to bike
patrol activities. However, safety is always of the utmost
concern, and they are required to wear bicycle helmets when
riding.
In
addition to their law enforcement duties, Bike Patrol officers
also enjoy the opportunity to positively interact with local
citizens - particularly youth. The Bike Patrol welcomes the
chance to do bike rodeos or bike safety presentations. Members
of the unit have also participated in fundraising rides for
charitable organizations.
