Our Mission
 

The mission of the Canon City Animal Control Division is to provide safety and public service to the citizens of Canon City while protecting the welfare of animals through enforcement and education.

The Animal Control Officer conduct investigations concerning animal related violations of Canon City Municipal Ordinances. Investigations primarily involve animals at large, noises disturbances, bites, vicious animals, cruelty, abuse, and abandonment .

 

 

Duties of the Animal Control Officer include:

  • Evaluation of sick or injured animals, domestic and wild, and transportation when necessary.
  • Apprehend and impound loose dogs and/or livestock.
  • Assist Canon City Police Officers when requested.
  • Evaluate animals for signs of cruelty, neglect and abuse.
     
  • Assist citizens with removal of nuisance wildlife (i.e. skunks, raccoons and squirrels) by setting up and maintaining live traps.
     
  • Removal of animal carcasses from roadways as well as private property in the event an animal carcass is found by a property owner.
     
  • Attempt to mediate neighborhood disputes over animal issues through communication, education and enforcement.
     
  • Cooperate with other agencies, such as the Department of Wildlife, when necessary.
     

    Remember both the City of Canon City and Fremont County require all dogs be licensed. Check with your veterinarian, the Canon City Police Department or the Fremont County Sheriff's Office for information on license and fees.

    Although cats are not currently required to be licensed, they can be impounded if they are determined to be a nuisance, and owners will be charged impound fees.

    Our Departments "Welcomes" you to the Canon City area and would like to remind you that for your safety and your dog, both Canon City and Fremont County require all dogs be leashed in public places.

    Dog License / Impound Fees:

  • Dog License (ODD YEARS) $6 for males & $10 unspayed females
     
  • Dog License (EVEN YEARS) $3 for males & $5 unspayed females
     
  • Dog Impound Fee $10 for the first 24 hours - $ 3 per day for each day thereafter.
     
  • We accept cash & checks only.
